Craving Like A Lunatic
In the last blog we talked about veggies. Let’s talk about something different, cravings.
If constant cravings for sugary treats are driving you wild, you will appreciate these tips that will help you with your urge to splurge.
Most cravings last only about 10 minutes and then subside. Cravings are often your body crying for water and oxygen, so wait 10 minutes, drink a glass a water with lemon and take deep breathes. You might try changing activities to clear your mind. Go for a walk, take a hot bath or phone a friend. A change of scenery usually works.
Rate your hunger on a scale of 1 to 10. Unless you are a 9 or 10, fight the urge. Still crazy? Give into your craving, but don’t go nuts. Your “craving cure” should set you back no more than about 150 calories or 6g of net carbs.
Eat foods containing tryptophan. You are probably reading this and thing what is she mumbling about? Tryptophan is an amino acid that your body uses to make the feel good brain chemical, serotonin. When your serotonin levels are down, we feel down, and the body’s way of lifting serotonin, and our spirits, is to load up on sugary or starchy foods. But if you eat foods high in tryptophan, (turkey chicken or whey protein), your body can replenish serotonin, preventing you from going on a huge carb binge.
Brush your teeth. Sometimes the flavor of toothpaste can take the edge off a sugar craving. After all Colgate and Coffee Crisp aren’t exactly complementary flavors. And food is less temping when your mouth feels clean.
Remember the old saying “a moment on the lips is a lifetime on the hips”. When you fight those cravings and win, the empowerment is unbelievable.
